IELTS

English Language

IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, assesses non-native English speakers' language proficiency.

There are three different IELTS tests

Academic IELTS

Academic IELTS is for international students who aim to study at university or another higher education institution in the UK (and in some other English-speaking countries).

General IELTS

General IELTS focuses more on social and workplace language and situations and is designed with less emphasis on academic standards and more on general communication.

IELTS for UKVI

This IELTS test serves as proof of English proficiency for those wishing to live, work or study in the UK. This test includes a special Life Skills element and is taken at an approved UKVI test centre.

All of these IELTS categories test students on the four main skills – reading, writing, speaking and listening, although the IELTS for UKVI also includes a Life Skills section. The reading, writing and listening tests are taken on the same day but the speaking test is taken separately, either before or after the other three.
Students taking IELTS are graded on a scale up to 9, reflecting their English language competence. The test focuses on proficiency, not merely passing or failing, providing a comprehensive evaluation.

Our IELTS courses

Before you start the IELTS course we need to assess your current level of English. We can do this remotely and simply with our own pre-IELTS test and an online meeting with our Academic Director, but if you already have other recent proof of your ability (a certificate from another reputable test) our online test may not be necessary.

When we know your English level, we can recommend one of our three IELTS courses

4-week IELTS course

This course is for students who are already at CEFR B2 level and focuses entirely upon the IELTS examinations themselves, through intensive exam preparation and practice. By the end of the course you will be so familiar with the challenges of time management, and with the types and formats of the tasks and questions and of the answers expected, that you’ll be able to sit the actual test with complete confidence.

8-week IELTS course

This is designed for students whose English language level is not quite to the standard you need to begin the 4-week course above, and includes an additional 4 weeks’ English language tuition to ensure you reach that standard. You will begin the IELTS course only after completion of the 4-week English language course.

12-week IELTS course

Identical to the 8-week course, except that the first 8 of the 12 weeks are devoted to improving your English level.

No pass or fail

IELTS does not have a pass or fail outcome; instead, individuals receive a graded score.

Scores range from 1 to 9, with 9 being the highest score possible.
