The person responsible for the implementation of this policy is the College Principal. It is the responsibility of the College’s Governing Body to ensure that this policy is reviewed and updated annually.

Kennedy College Oxford is aware of the Government’s policy on the prevention of violent extremism. The College therefore seeks:

  • to be aware of the threat from violent extremist groups and the risks they can pose for young people;
  • when necessary and appropriate, to provide information to young people about what can cause violent extremism;
  • to inform students, when appropriate, where to find additional information and advice;
  • to take, when required, preventative action by consulting local authorities, police and community representatives.

We understand that schools and colleges can make a contribution by helping young people to create communities that are more resilient to extremism, and by protecting the wellbeing of particular students or groups who may be vulnerable to being drawn into violent extremist activity. This may be achieved by:

  • promoting and reinforcing shared values;
  • enabling free and open debate;
  • listening to, and supporting, mainstream voices;
  • breaking down segregation amongst different student communities (e.g. supporting inter-faith and inter-cultural dialogue and understanding);
  • engaging all students in playing a full and active role in society;
  • ensuring students’ safety and ensuring that colleges are free from bullying, harassment and intimidation;
  • providing support for students, who may be at risk, with sources of advice and guidance; − ensuring that students and staff are aware of their roles and responsibilities in preventing violent extremism.
